Patios in Scruton

Scruton is a village south-east of Northallerton, east of Leeming Bar and west of the River Swale. Church, green, farms and houses make a place of its own, not a suburb of the town.

Summary

We lay patios in Scruton, DL7, for houses by the green and on the lanes between the main road and the river. The gardens are vale clay, and some are long. Ask us for a quote and we will set the levels to the plot.

A village in its own right

Scruton sits south-east of Northallerton. It is not a housing edge of the town, and it is not Leeming Bar. Leeming Bar is to the west, on the busy road. Scruton is east of that, with a church, a green, farms and houses, and the River Swale further east again. You come out to it. You do not stumble into it from a town pavement.

The church and the green give the middle. Houses and farmsteads stand around that middle and along the lanes towards the river. Some gardens are short. Others are long, shaded near the house and open at the far end. Two paved areas, one at the door and one where the evening light falls, often make more sense than a single sheet. Our team treats that as a Scruton question. There is no burgage plot to thread. The ordinary job is a garden on clay, with a gate and a wind that crosses the vale.

Between the main road and the Swale

The land between Leeming Bar and the river is low vale, and clay is the gardening fact. Nearer the Swale the ground can feel wetter in a hollow, and that outline should be checked on the flood map for planning. We do not assign a flood zone from the district. A house by the green and a house on the lane towards the water are not the same. Look at the map for the one you own.

Surface water is the everyday issue. A long lawn can shed rain towards the house if the fall is wrong. We correct that under the patio even when the rest stays grass. The outlet is a border or the lawn, somewhere water can linger without entering the door. The Geology Viewer shows the mapped surface. Glacial clay is what we expect, and we still dig. Wind is the other constant. We can pave a sheltered terrace at the house and a second one in the sun. We will not pave a ribbon of slabs the length of the lawn. A simple path is enough.

Church, green and farm gardens

Houses that look towards the green need a little manners. The front should stay the front. If the cottage is listed, ask North Yorkshire Council before anything touches the building. Conservation areas are drawn on the planning data map. We will not say from memory that the whole of Scruton is inside one. A ground-level patio at the back usually needs no application. More than 300 mm above the surrounding ground can count as a raised platform, which these gardens seldom require. Sealed front paving over five square metres, draining towards the road, usually needs permission. Our page on patios by village greens gathers those checks.

A farmhouse yard may already be hardstanding, with a fall towards a gate. We can take part of it back to a place you can sit, without pretending a working yard is only for chairs. Say what still has to take a vehicle, and we will stop the patio short of that work.

Materials for a long garden

Sandstone is the settled choice beside brick and stone, especially where the church sets the tone. Two areas in the same flag look deliberate. Porcelain is the right talk for a newer house with wide doors. Block paving joins them as the path and the bin route. Stone, porcelain and block paving can share a long garden if each has a job. On a short cottage plot we prefer one material. A riven flag or a textured block is kinder than a smooth slab at a door that faces the weather.

Brompton is north-west, towards the town. Ainderby Steeple is to the west. If your address is Scruton, the green, the church and the lane towards the Swale are the picture we want.

How to ask for a quote

Ask for a quote with the postcode, whether the garden is long or cottage-short, and whether you think of the house as by the green or towards the river. Our team will propose one terrace or two, a path if you need it, and a way for rain to reach the lawn. The vale clay guide is the background if the lawn stays soft. You are in a village to the south-east of the town, with your own green and your own relationship to the Swale. The quote should sound like that.

Patio FAQs: Scruton

Is Scruton part of Northallerton?

No. It is a separate village, south-east of the town and east of Leeming Bar, with the Swale to the east. We treat it as its own place.

Can a long garden have two patios?

Yes. A terrace at the door and a second area where the light falls, joined by a simple path, often works better than one long run of paving.

Do houses near the Swale need a flood check?

If the garden is on the low side towards the river, yes. Use the flood map for planning for that outline. We do not guess a zone for the whole village.

What should we send for a quote?

The quote form needs the postcode, a rough size, and whether you want one seating area or two. Say how we get in through the gate.
